Peritoneal dialysis

At ATHANI, we understand the unique challenges faced by individuals with kidney failure who opt for Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) as their treatment option. Our Peritoneal Dialysis Support Program aims to provide comprehensive care and assistance to those undergoing PD treatment.

What is Peritoneal Dialysis?

Peritoneal Dialysis is a type of dialysis that uses the lining of the abdominal cavity (peritoneum) as a filter to remove waste products from the blood.

How Peritoneal Dialysis Works

  1. Catheter insertion: A surgeon inserts a catheter into the abdominal cavity.
  2. Dialysate infusion: A sterile solution (dialysate) is infused into the abdominal cavity through the catheter.
  3. Waste removal: The dialysate absorbs waste products from the blood through the peritoneum.
  4. Drainage: The dialysate is drained from the abdominal cavity, removing waste products.

Types of Peritoneal Dialysis

  1. Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD): Exchanges are done manually throughout the day.
  2. Automated Peritoneal Dialysis (APD): A machine performs exchanges at night.
  3. Continuous Cycling Peritoneal Dialysis (CCPD): A combination of CAPD and APD.

Benefits of Peritoneal Dialysis

  1. Flexibility: PD can be done at home, allowing for greater independence.
  2. Gentle: PD is a gentler treatment option compared to hemodialysis.
  3. Nutritional benefits: PD allows for better nutrient absorption.
