How Peritoneal Dialysis Works

  1. Catheter insertion: A surgeon inserts a catheter into the abdominal cavity.
  2. Dialysate infusion: A sterile solution (dialysate) is infused into the abdominal cavity through the catheter.
  3. Waste removal: The dialysate absorbs waste products from the blood through the peritoneum.
  4. Drainage: The dialysate is drained from the abdominal cavity, removing waste products.

Types of Peritoneal Dialysis

  1. Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD): Exchanges are done manually throughout the day.
  2. Automated Peritoneal Dialysis (APD): A machine performs exchanges at night.
  3. Continuous Cycling Peritoneal Dialysis (CCPD): A combination of CAPD and APD.
