Our Journey: The Story of ATHANI

Explore ATHANI’s inspiring journey from humble beginnings in 2005 to a leader in compassionate care. Discover our milestones, challenges, and commitment to supporting vulnerable populations in need.

Humble Beginnings - 2005

The Birth of a Vision

ATHANI’s journey began in August 2005 with the establishment of the Narikkuni Pain and Palliative Care Centre. This modest initiative aimed to provide essential palliative care to cancer patients and paraplegics in the local community. With just one room provided free of charge by NIC Narikkuni, we started our mission with a focus on delivering compassionate care. Initially, we enrolled 25 patients for outpatient and home care services, laying the foundation for what would become a vital resource for countless individuals and families in need.

Growing Demand - 2007

Expanding Our Reach

Within just two years, the center gained significant recognition, leading to an overwhelming demand for our services. The number of patients seeking care increased steadily, reflecting the urgent need for palliative support in our community. This growth prompted us to expand our offerings, including regular home care visits, outpatient clinics, volunteer training sessions, and community awareness programs. As more volunteers joined our cause, we established ourselves as a crucial resource, providing not only medical assistance but also emotional and psychological support to those facing life-threatening illnesses

Strengthening Partnerships - 2008

Collaboration for Excellence

Understanding the importance of collaboration, we sought partnerships to enhance the quality of care we provide. Our relationship with the Institute of Palliative Medicine in Kozhikode was particularly instrumental, allowing us to adopt best practices and integrate modern methodologies into our services. This partnership not only improved our clinical capabilities but also provided training opportunities for our staff and volunteers, ensuring that we delivered the highest standard of care to our patients.

Recognizing Community Needs - 2011

Identifying Challenges

As we engaged more deeply with the community, we recognized the critical issues faced by individuals battling terminal illnesses, particularly those from low-income backgrounds. The need for a comprehensive palliative care complex became increasingly clear, as we aimed to address the gaps in care for impoverished and abandoned patients. This realization became a driving force behind our mission, prompting us to expand our vision and develop facilities that would provide not only medical care but also rehabilitation and support services tailored to the unique needs of these vulnerable populations.

Establishing ATHANI - 2011

The Formation of ATHANI

In August 2011, after years of dedicated service under the Narikkuni Pain and Palliative Care Centre, we officially rebranded and formed ATHANI. This transformation reflected our evolved mission and commitment to providing holistic care. The name change signified our broader vision to encompass a wider range of services, including rehabilitation, education, and economic empowerment initiatives aimed at uplifting the communities we serve.

Community Support - 2011

The Power of Generosity

The generosity of community members and organizations has been vital to our growth and success. In November 2011, a well-wisher allowed us to establish a temporary destitute home on their property, providing a safe space for those in need. This act of kindness exemplified the spirit of collaboration that defines our organization. The continued support from local businesses and individuals has enabled us to expand our services and reach more people, fostering a sense of community that is essential to our mission.

Securing a Permanent Home - 2011

Land Acquisition

In 2011, after years of hard work and community support, we successfully purchased a 50-cent plot near Narikkuni. This acquisition was a significant milestone, as it provided the foundation for the future development of dedicated facilities for our services. With this new land, we could envision a comprehensive care complex that would house various services, including palliative care, rehabilitation, and education programs, ultimately allowing us to serve our community more effectively.

Foundation Stone Ceremony - 2012

A Historic Milestone

On February 17, 2012, a monumental event took place when the foundation stone for the ATHANI complex was laid by the Honorable Former Chief Minister of Kerala, Mr. Oommen Chandy. This ceremony marked a significant turning point in our history, symbolizing the community’s support for our mission and the promise of a brighter future for the individuals we serve. It was a moment of pride and joy, as we celebrated the beginning of a new era in our efforts to provide comprehensive care.

Inauguration and Recognition - 2013

Opening Our Doors

By mid-2013, we completed the initial construction phase and successfully transitioned residents from our makeshift destitute home into the newly built facility. This milestone was celebrated with the inauguration of separate men’s and women’s blocks for the destitute home, along with the Occupational Training Centre. September 2013 also marked our official recognition as a peripheral center of the Institute of Palliative Medicine, Kozhikode, acknowledging our dedication to quality care and further solidifying our role as a leader in palliative services in the region.
